Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such treatments need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
